Introduction

When summer approaches, we yearn for shade and a tranquil place to rest. In Korea, there is a destination where the desires of modern people for peace and rest intersect with the ideals of Confucian scholars from centuries ago.
Welcome to Damyang.
Here lie Soswaewon and Sigyeongjeong, not just historical gardens but living expressions of the Joseon Dynasty's intellectual and philosophical spirit. In this journey, we explore the shaded bamboo groves and serene pavilions where the essence of ‘rest through reflection’ lives on.

1. Damyang – A Land of Confucian Ideals

Damyang is more than just a region with beautiful scenery. It is a spiritual landscape that embodies the values of Korea’s traditional scholars.
Here, Confucian literati practiced a modest life, immersed in nature, and created spaces that reflected their ideals.
At the heart of this is Soswaewon, a garden of serene order, and Sigyeongjeong, a pavilion of poetic rest.

2. Soswaewon – The Garden of Tranquil Purity

Soswaewon (瀟灑園), meaning “clean, serene garden,” was built in the 16th century by scholar Yang San-bo after the political purge of his mentor, Jo Gwang-jo.
Rather than clinging to ambition, Yang returned to his hometown to live in harmony with nature.

● Harmony with the Landscape

Soswaewon follows the curves of the valley stream. Pavilions, huts, and small waterfalls are arranged naturally without disturbing the original terrain. It embodies a nature-first garden philosophy.

● Meaningful Names

The two main pavilions are Gwangpunggak (Pavilion of Bright Wind) and Jewoldang (Pavilion of Rain-cleared Moonlight)—both evoking tranquility and enlightenment through the elements of nature.

● A Place of Retreat

Soswaewon was not an escape from the world but a conscious choice to live contemplatively. It became a spiritual retreat, where scholars wrote poetry, painted, and pursued inner peace.

3. Sigyeongjeong – A Pavilion Where Even Shadows Rest

A short distance from Soswaewon, perched above a riverbank, stands Sigyeongjeong (息影亭).
Its name translates to “a place where even shadows rest,” symbolizing a deep serenity that welcomes both body and spirit.

● Historical Ties

Sigyeongjeong was frequented by scholars such as Kim Seong-won and the famous poet Jeong Cheol, who wrote part of Sungsan Byeolgok here.
It was a hub for friendship, poetry, and a shared appreciation of nature.

Overlooking Damyang Stream and surrounded by bamboo, the pavilion offers a picture-perfect setting for introspection. It invites the traveler to pause and reconnect with something timeless.

After visiting Soswaewon and Sigyeongjeong, take a walk through the Juknokwon Bamboo Forest.
