1. 세병관이란? – 이름 속의 의미

'세병관(洗兵館)'이라는 이름은 '무기를 씻는 곳'이라는 의미를 담고 있습니다.

Seobyeonggwan in Tongyeong – Tracing Admiral Yi's Legacy and the Joseon Navy

Introduction

In a tranquil port city surrounded by emerald seas and scattered islands, a timeless monument stands tall – Seobyeonggwan in Tongyeong.
This grand structure was the command center of the Joseon naval forces and holds within its frame the presence of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Korea's most revered naval hero.
Today, we explore this heritage site to feel the pulse of the sea warriors who once defended their nation with iron resolve.

1. What is Seobyeonggwan? – The Meaning of Its Name

The name Seobyeonggwan (洗兵館) literally means “the hall where weapons are cleansed.”
But beyond that, it symbolizes the cleansing of warfare and a return to peace.
It served as the official venue where naval commanders, called Tongjesa (통제사), held briefings, administered military affairs, and welcomed dignitaries during the Joseon Dynasty.

2. Tongyeong and the Naval Headquarters of Joseon

Tongyeong was the strategic heart of the Joseon Dynasty’s naval defense system.
It hosted the Samdo Sugun Tongjeyeong (삼도수군통제영) – the headquarters of the Three Provinces’ Naval Forces: Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Chungcheong.
Seobyeonggwan stood at the core of this base, both symbolically and administratively.

3. History of Seobyeonggwan – Yi Sun-sin and Beyond

Although the current structure of Seobyeonggwan was rebuilt in 1605, its origin traces back to Admiral Yi’s time.
During the Imjin War (Japanese invasions from 1592), Admiral Yi commanded the navy from nearby bases including Hansando’s Jeseungdang.
Seobyeonggwan continued to serve as the naval headquarters even after Yi’s death, preserving his legacy in bricks and timber.

4. Architecture and Aesthetics

Seobyeonggwan is a magnificent wooden structure with 9 front bays and 5 side bays, showcasing the pinnacle of traditional Korean architecture.
Its curved tiled roof, stately pillars, and intricate eaves embody the harmony and strength of Joseon-era palaces.
It is often compared to Gyeongbokgung’s Geunjeongjeon or Changdeokgung’s Injeongjeon in its historical and architectural importance.

5. Tracing Admiral Yi's Footsteps

The spirit of Admiral Yi Sun-sin still lingers in Seobyeonggwan.
The site is surrounded by related landmarks such as the Yi Sun-sin Statue, Hansando Battle Memorial, Chungnyeolsa Shrine, and Jeseungdang Hall.
These form a living historical trail through which visitors can follow the admiral’s heroic journey.

6. Cultural Significance of Seobyeonggwan

Designated as Treasure No. 305 by the Korean government, Seobyeonggwan is more than a building—it is a cultural testament.
Each year, the Tongjeyeong Cultural Festival re-enacts naval parades and military ceremonies in its courtyard.
