Following the Fragrance of Scholars – Cultural Journey to Donam Seowon and Noseong Hyanggyo in Nonsan

Introduction

The spirit of Joseon scholars was not cultivated only at a desk. Surrounded by mountains and rivers, they refined their character, shared knowledge, and nurtured future generations. Donam Seowon and Noseong Hyanggyo in Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do, are not mere historical buildings but living monuments that have preserved the dignity and etiquette of scholars for centuries. Today, we set out to breathe in the spirit of Joseon in these timeless places.

1. Donam Seowon – The Fragrance of Learning in a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Located in Yeonsan-myeon, Nonsan, Donam Seowon was built to honor Kim Jang-saeng, a great scholar of mid-Joseon, and to educate his disciples. Seowon was more than a private educational institution—it was a community where moral values and etiquette were practiced daily.
Donam Seowon is recognized globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historical and academic significance. Upon entering, visitors see the lecture hall, shrine space, and dormitories arranged in a clear layout that reflects the institution’s purpose.

Standing in the courtyard of the lecture hall, one can imagine Kim Jang-saeng debating Confucian classics with his students. His focus was not on mere knowledge acquisition but on practicing virtue—a lesson just as relevant today.

2. Noseong Hyanggyo – The Local Center of Education and Etiquette

Not far from Donam Seowon, Noseong Hyanggyo is a preserved example of a local Confucian school during the Joseon era. Hyanggyo served as the center for educating young men in Confucian classics and maintaining community etiquette.
The main hall, Daeseongjeon, houses the memorial tablets of Confucius and other sages, while Myeongnyundang was the lecture space for students. Its layout follows the Confucian principle of Jeonhak-humyo—lectures at the front, shrine at the back.

Noseong Hyanggyo is still used today for traditional rites, keeping its cultural heritage alive. Standing here, visitors can almost see the scholars practicing seasonal etiquette and living according to moral principles.

3. The Message of These Historic Sites

Both Donam Seowon and Noseong Hyanggyo served as the moral and educational centers of their communities. While Seowon was a private scholarly institution and Hyanggyo an official local school, both aimed to cultivate character and a sense of community.
