One morning, as Gregor Samsa awoke from uneasy dreams, he discovered that he had been transformed into a gigantic insect. Lying on his back as hard as armor, he could see his dome-like belly, divided into stiff segments, rising and falling under the bedsheet. His many legs, pitifully thin compared to the rest of his bulk, flickered helplessly before his eyes.

 

“What has happened to me?” he thought, staring at the faded wallpaper on the ceiling. Just last night he had been a traveling salesman, rushing from train to train, worrying about sales figures, and now—this. He tried to roll onto his side, as he had often done in sleep, but the heavy carapace pressed him down, and when he lifted his head, his body rocked helplessly. He attempted again and again, sweat dripping, while the alarm clock ticked mercilessly beside him. It was already half past six; by now he should have been on the train to work.

 

A knock came at the door. “Gregor, are you not up yet?” his mother’s anxious voice asked. Gregor opened his mouth to answer, but what came out was a strange, squeaking noise, not human speech. Shocked, he tried again, but the sound remained grotesque. His father’s heavy steps approached. “Why don’t you open this door?” came the stern voice, filled with suspicion. His sister’s softer tone followed, “Gregor, are you ill? Please say something.”

 

Then another voice intruded—sharp and officious. It was the chief clerk, sent from his company. “Mr. Samsa, your absence has been noted. Your performance has been under review, and excuses will not suffice. Open at once.” Gregor dragged himself toward the door, desperate to explain, but all that issued forth was that same incomprehensible sound. The clerk recoiled in disgust.

Summoning all his strength, Gregor rocked himself forward, unlocked the door with trembling mandibles, and swung it open. There he stood, revealed in his monstrous form. His mother screamed and collapsed back, his father clenched his fists in rage and horror, and the chief clerk staggered backward, pale, nearly fainting.

 

From that day forward, the family began to change. At first, his sister Grete brought him food, whispering comfort though averting her eyes. But soon her visits grew shorter, her tone colder. The room filled with dust and rubbish; the door was often left closed for hours. His father treated him with dread and fury, while his mother could hardly bear to look. Gregor shrank into the dark corners, listening to the life of the family continue without him.

 

His sister finally said what all had thought: “We cannot go on like this. He is not my brother anymore. He is a burden.” The words pierced deeper than any wound. One evening, his father hurled an apple at him; it struck his back and lodged deep, festering until his strength waned.

 

Gregor lay silent, his breathing shallow, his limbs too weak to move. His family no longer checked on him. And then, one morning, he died quietly in his room.

 

When the body was removed, the family felt an unfamiliar relief. The father straightened his posture, the mother sighed deeply, and Grete walked to the window, stretching as the sunlight poured in. They spoke of moving to a new apartment, of a fresh start, as if Gregor had never been.

 

Interpretation and Application

Kafka’s story is not simply about a man turning into an insect. It is about a person discarded when no longer “useful.” Even today, society often measures human worth by productivity or function. But dignity does not vanish when efficiency fades.

“Are we also judging others by conditions? Are we rejecting people when they no longer serve our needs?”
